Adobe Lightroom Web Engines, Tutorials and Resources

TTG Pages

TTG Pages is several strides ahead of its progenitors. It takes the best aspects of TTG LR Pages, TTG Auto Index and TTG Stage and builds them into a single web engine that’s more powerful, more flexible and easier to use. Whether you’re a newcomer to Lightroom’s Web module, or a TTG veteran, TTG Pages is the tool you’ve been waiting for to streamline your Lightroom-to-website workflow, and to build a website you can take pride in.

TTG Pages is not an image gallery. TTG Pages is website construction tool, used to create a home in which your galleries can thrive. It creates a Home page, an About page, a Contact page with email submission form, and a self-populating gallery index of your image galleries. The Home and About pages can also be configured to host Flash gallery presentations of your images.

The slideshow below shows a few of the page layouts from included template designs.

Please install Flash® and turn on Javascript.

Installation Demonstration

Download Demo *

* The demo is fully function within Lightroom, but will not allow you to export pages. Layouts can be saved as a template in the demo, and applied to the full version later, though.

By installing any purchased or downloaded web engine, plugin or template from The Turning Gate (TTG), You, the user, agree to the End User License Agreement. Make a point to read this document, as it contains important information regarding your purchase and your rights as a user, for which you will be held accountable.

System Requirements

TTG Pages requires Lightroom 2.4 or greater.

The Gallery Index requires a web-server running PHP 5.2 or greater, with Glob() function enabled.

The Form-to-Email script used by the engine’s selection gallery features additionally requires a web server that supports the PHP mail() function. If your server does not support PHP, you may opt to use Form-to-Email Remote instead, which requires only an account with www.formtoemailremote.com.

Windows users should have installed Internet Explorer 7 or above, regardless whether IE is used as the primary browser.

Video Demonstration

Setup

In order for the form submission to reach you, the photographer, the form-to-email script needs to be configured.

First, open the distributed ttg_pages.lrwebengine package. On a PC, this is a folder; double-click as usual and dive right in. On a Mac, Ctrl-click the package and select “Show Package Contents” to open it in a Finder window.

Next, locate FormToEmail.php in the /resources/ folder and open the file in a text-editor. Locate “Step 2″ around line 83, and follow the instructions you find there, setting your email address and, optionally, a continuation address to which users will be redirected after form submission.

Save your changes, and install the web engine as explained in the Installation instructions. Your changes will affect all exported galleries.

Alternatively, you may register for a free account with www.formtoemailremote.com and input your user information in the Form-To-Email Remote section of the gallery options in Lightroom’s Web module.

Creating Your Pages

This is not a slider-by-slider walkthrough, but a brief overview of how to go about using the template. Consider this a Quick Start Manual.

The first step is the most important. Make sure you have at least THREE images selected in your filmstrip. TTG Pages needs these images to populate your pages, and will return errors if it can’t find them. You can arrange the images in the filmstrip according to what page you would like them to appear on your site; the first image will appear on the Home page, the second on the About page, and the third on the Contact page.

With your images selected, begin either with the default settings or one of the included template presets. With one exception, it’s best to simply work your way down through the controls, starting at the top and moving towards the bottom. The only exception is that you might want to first visit the Output Settings pane to set the size of your images.

the Site Info pane

Here your header is configured. Be sure to fill in the HTML <title>; it’s very important for search engines. See my tutorial on Search Engine Optimization for more information on how best to do this.

Work your way through the options for the Identity Plate, Header / Page Settings and Menu Settings. The Menu Items are pre-configured and can be left alone. If you need to add to them or wish to change them, you may do so. But the menu is fully functional without interference if you’re content to leave them be.

the Color Palette pane

Here you will find the content and formatting options for your pages. The first subset of options, Image Matting, controls the properties of images on your page. Next, Global Copy Settings affects the appearance of text and boxes on your Home, About and Contact pages.

From there, we get into options for specific pages. First, Home Page Copy allows you to setup your Home page. Four layouts are available, which affect the position of the image (or slideshow; see below) relative to the text on the page. You can also fill in your paragraphs and section headings. You may edit this text in the control pane, or simply click a paragraph or heading on the page to edit the copy directly.

You can create line-breaks in your text by inserting the HTML <br />. You can also code hyperlinks into your paragraphs using HTML.

Next are the settings for the Gallery Index. These configure the appearance of your auto index grid. The box items you see on this page are generated from your filmstrip and meant only as a visual representation of what the page will look like when populated. This allows you to configure the appearance of the boxes while receiving the visual feedback of having them on-screen. Your exported index will be empty, and will later be populated by the galleries that you install on your site (see below).

The About Page Copy options are identical to the Home Page Copy options.

Finally, the Contact Page copy section allows you to setup your Contact page and form. You can use those line-breaks here to format your address and other contact information if you so desire, or simply write paragraphs and rely on the contact form.

You can also setup Form-to-Email Remote here if you would like to use it.

the Appearance pane

Here you may perform replacement of images with Flash galleries on your Home and About pages. If you have previously used TTG Stage, this section should be familiar to you. The controls are divided into two sets, one for the Home page and one for the About page. The two sets are otherwise identical.

Enable the replacement using the check-box for each page. The image on that page will then be replaced with an empty stage that will later be occupied by your Flash gallery. You may setup the size and appearance of the stage using the provided sliders and color selectors. The Gallery Background color will carry through to your Flash gallery, so be sure to set that correctly here.

Select your Gallery Type — this is the type of Flash gallery you will want to place on the page. The page will then be configured for that gallery, and will display instructions on how to set it up. Flash galleries must be exported separately into folders with specific names (TTG Pages tells you how to name the folders; pay attention to the instructions shown in the preview), and then copied into the root of your TTG Pages folder.

the Image Info pane

Allows you to set the ‘alt’ information for the images on each page, and factors into search engine optimization.

the Output Settings pane

As with other Lightroom web engines, here you set the size of your images, output sharpening, etc. You may also insert code for Google Analytics. See the tutorial.

EXPORT

When you’ve finished working in the panels and feeling pretty good about your pages, go ahead and press the Export button.

Installing Image Galleries

Image galleries must be created using other templates; preferrably other TTG templates. TTG Highslide Gallery Pro is an excellent choice, and will be the first to be updated with pre-built menus for use with TTG Pages. But that’s tangential …

Export your image galleries to folders of their own. Inside the exported folder for TTG Pages, there is a folder named /galleries/. Exported image galleries should be copied into this folder. Any gallery already enabled for use with the auto index and located within this /galleries/ folder will appear in your gallery index when your website is online.

Changed handling of Google Analytics. Now requires only your Web Property ID (UA-xxxxxx-x), rather than the entire block of Javascript.
Because scripts can no longer be cheated into the Google Analytics entry field as before, I’ve added a new Advanced Options control group to the Output Settings control pane. There are three input fields: Add CSS rules in <head>, Add script to <head> and Add script before </body>. CSS rules are visible in preview, while the scripts are only added when the gallery is published (exported, or previewed in browser) to prevent any possible Lightroom tantrums.
Added a new #wrapper DIV to the source code that allows for new custom styling possibilities.
Source code for Lightroom’s preview onclick events now prevented from exporting, resulting in cleaner code that IE8 should no longer bitch about.
v3.3 ( 2010-01-02 )
Now creates a simple redirect script in your /galleries/ folder so that anyone accessing that location by direct URL will be rerouted to your gallery index page.
Updated Shadowbox to version 3.0rc1.
New option to position the identity plate and header beneath the menu.
Added Heading and Copy font-size sliders for each individual page; no longer one global setting for all.

Styling adjustments for consistency with TTG Highslide Gallery.
Updated templates.
v3.0 (2009-09-09)
Initial release; evolved from TTG LR Pages 2.x, hence the 3.0 designation; also incorporates elements of TTG Auto Index and TTG Stage.

Hello Matt,

I’ve been using older (free) versions of your LR plugins, mostly TTG-HTML and Autoindex since 2008 or so. I am considering buying the current versions of some plugins.
So, I had some questions:

1. I was wondering if the php-related bug in Autoindex has been since fixed. What I am referring to is that I had to replace the lines as follows (php5-5.2.12, apache 1.3.41):
< <img src=" class= humbImg title=\ alt=\ />

> <img src=" ?> class= humbImg title=\
> alt=\ />

So, I ended up rewriting a part of index.php into this:
for($i=0; $i

<img src=" class= humbImg title=\ alt=\ />

<a href=">Open Album

I am not sure if it would be as easy to customize your new versions of the script, – I’d like to make sure it would be working out of the box if I purchased it.

2. There was a bug that you fixed upon my feedback (in Jan. 2008). That was related to how LR was displaying the preview while using IE-6 installed.
I’ve noticed that the demo version of the TTG HTML now again has that problem (under LR3).

3. I noticed that switching from LR2 to LR3 broke the watermarking functionality on your old TTG HTML plugin, and the log of changes in the most recent version of it indicates that you fixed that. However, it doesn’t work in the demo version, while it is not mentioned that this functionality isn’t working. Either the demo version is still an older one, or you may want to mention that it is disabled as well in the description of the demo version.

4. I have a suggestion for the future features, – or rather a future plugin.
It would be nice to have a plugin that has the functionalities that you have in Highslide/Highslide Pro (i.e. feedback, shopping cart, etc.) but is based on TTG HTML, i.e. uses simple HTML pages instead of other viewers (such as Highslide or shadowbox that are not always convenient).

Thank you in advance for your response and your consideration.

1. The code now being used is very different from what used to be in the template when it was free. There are no known outstanding issues, but that’s really all I can say about it.

2. I no longer make efforts to support IE6. We’re two versions on now, and IE9 is nearing completion. If people haven’t updated their browsers by now — for their own good and security, if not for better reasons — then I’m certainly not going to waste my time catering to their backwards web-browsing habits. Technology moves forward, and at this point I would only be holding my products back by continuing to address the particular concerns of IE6.

3. I’m short on time and have not updated the demos.

4. No comment.

Regarding 2.:
It’s, of course, your choice, but note that MS still supports IE6 under WinXP SP3 (including issuing security updates, etc.)
As I do not use IE separately at all (and I wish LR weren’t employing it as a built-in browser), I see no reasons to install newer IE.
More over, if I remember correctly, IE8 was installing (or requiring) something that I didn’t like to have on the system.

Best regards.

PS.
… and LR’s own galleries show in preview (with IE6) just fine.
I don’t know what Adobe does, but they don’t break compatibility.

And you’re overlooking the fact that Adobe’s galleries are not very forward thinking. The Flash gallery is identical in all browsers because it’s Flash and runs using the Flash Player plugin. You can have the latest version of Flash player installed in IE6 if you like, and the Flash gallery will deliver an experience identical to what you’d have with a newer browser. Flash is browser independent. But it’s slow loading, presents several interface issues, requires the third-party plugin, and won’t run on iPhones or iPads.

The HTML gallery is designed according to specifications that were already outdated before the gallery was even made. It lacks complexity, and is therefore also lacking in features. It doesn’t validate, and it’s fairly rigid in design and capability. That may be fine for you, but I hold myself to higher standards. I can tell you right now that the people making Lightroom are not web-designers, because no designer working in the field today would be satisfied with the Lightroom HTML Gallery. If I myself were satisfied with it, I would never have started making web engines of my own and this site would not exist.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON IN THE WORLD to be using IE6 at this point, and therefore I see no reason to support it, being as supporting the browser is:

1) a web-designer’s worst nightmare.
2) would necessitate cluttering my code full of hacks, workarounds and cheats.
3) would double my development time, which I’m already short on trying to maintain so many web engines.
4) coddling people who need to wake up and upgrade there browsers.

I do not coddle backwards practices. The web and it’s underlying technologies are moving forward. HTML5 and CSS3 are becoming increasingly commonplace and IE6 does not and will never support these emerging technologies. I will not waste hours, days or weeks of my time to support a browser that should be dead and forgotten. If Internet users refuse to take five minutes to upgrade their software, then I should not be expected to waste such immense portions of my own limited time in coddling their bad decisions.

And so, you can argue all you like that Adobe’s (lame) galleries support IE6. And I will tell you, then go use Adobe’s galleries and not mine. Your five or ten dollars is not worth to me the time, effort or frustration it would cost me to support a browser that is now in use by less than one-percent of Internet users.

If you’re receiving errors related to Slideshow Pro, then I suggest you contact support at http://www.slideshowpro.net. It’s not my product.

Alejandro July 4, 2010 at 4:33 pm

Hi: Matt:

This is not an slideshow error, I’ve dobled checked it.

The index.html page generated by SSP loads swffit.js script and uses it. You can find swffit.js in the js subfolder

The index.html page generated by TTH Pages does not load swffit.js, but the page calls swffit at line 175.

I’m just saying that you might load swffit.js, as ssp does, or comment line 175 because swffit is of no use at all inside ttg Pages

This is an absolutely minor glitch. Pages works well, problem is that both ie/chrome report page loaded but errors in page.

I have commented line 175 for my install and removed the error, but I do not know if I should better load swffit.

Hope this helps to clarify

Thanks for the support.

Hi,

Have just created a jigasawrus gallery (www.photographers-toolbox.com) and the gallery index isnt picking up a thumbnail from this gallery correctly, http://www.newfolio.co.uk/galleryindex.php.

Not sure if this is jigasawrus or Pages, they are supposed to be compatible

Thanks

I have quite some images to be displayed by TTG Pages non-flash slideshow. If you open up my site, you will notice it takes quite some time before the first picture is displayed as it – I think – has to (down)load first all pictures before rendering the first one. Can something be done about that? Besides that, it works fine but when I’m showing my website to someone else on my iPhone (via edge), it takes too long as first all the pictures are downloaded.

Reply

theturninggate July 5, 2010 at 12:15 pm

The only solution is to include fewer images in your front page slideshow. The bulk of your images should be in your galleries, not on your front page.

Hi Matt,

Just started using TTG Pages. Very nice.

Do you have any ideas why I get this at the bottom of my pages when I include google tracking code?

Thanks

No idea. How are you including the Google tracking code?

Reply

Kevin July 13, 2010 at 12:18 pm

I’m pasting the analytics code into “Use Google Analytics” under “Output Settings” in the TTG pages menu.

Kevin July 13, 2010 at 12:26 pm

Just had a closer look at google analytics, they offer an “advanced” tracking code for php pages. Perhaps I should try this one instead. Sorry I didn’t see that earlier. I’ll get back to you and let you know if it works.

Google
“For any PHP pages, put the following code in a file (for example, analyticstracking.php) and upload it to your site. Then, add the following line to each template page immediately after the opening tag: “

theturninggate July 13, 2010 at 11:10 pm

If you’re using the latest version of TTG Pages, you don’t need to paste code. You only need your web property ID for the domain, beginning UA- and ending in a series of numbers.

Reply

Kevin July 14, 2010 at 4:18 am

Sorry, should have seen that before bothering you.

I’d like to point out a possible “bug”. I’ve noticed, not only on my website, that the arrow navigation links either side of the image on the homepage GalleryView slideshow seem to appear broken when viewing in Google Chrome, but they’re fine in Firefox.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Matt

Slideshowpro is releasing a new Director version which will allow publishing for Ipads Iphones…

It would be very nice if you could add support to the new version ipad compatible in TTG Pages and Stage

Thanks.

Please, let us know your ideas or plans on this topic

Reply

theturninggate July 14, 2010 at 10:44 am

TTG Pages works fine on iPhones and iPads as is. TTG Stage creates embed pages for Flash galleries; Flash doesn’t work on iPhones or iPads, and so it would be pointless to add any type of additional support for those devices. If you choose Flash galleries, then you are clearly not targeting those devices as part of your audience.

Reply

Alejandro Valladares July 14, 2010 at 12:55 pm

Yes, you’re absolutely right. I have not expressed myself accurately

Slideshowpro (SSP) now has a flash gallery, but it is releasing a new type of gallery that would still be flash on desktops, but move to a non-flash technology for ipads/iphones.

So, the new type of gallery will suit both worlds.
TTG PAges/stage both work nicely on the iphone/ipad.

I was just asking if you could add support for the new type of SSP gallery that adds support for non flash devices. As they state in their forum, SSP Director will publish a code that should be pasted into an html page, and that’all to go…

I hope I have clarified my request.

Thanks againg, sorry for my english

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

No. Searching requires a database and PHP scripting, things that LR’s Web module doesn’t do. Try PixelPost or Wordpress gallery plugins if that’s what you want.

I’m using ttg pages and ttg highslide gallery pro.
Google see all of my pages, but doesn’t see any gallery in “galleries” folder.
It sees “galleryindex.php”, but does not go any further.

When I’m generating a sitemap, I get the same problem.

Thanks for your help.

What are you talking about? Google Analytics, or the search engine?

Reply

Michel July 17, 2010 at 2:34 pm

I’m talking about Google analytics.
It’s the same problem when I’m generating an xml sitemp with a sitemap generator service.

Reply

theturninggate July 17, 2010 at 2:41 pm

Well it does take 24-48 hours for analytics to gather data. The two engines use identical code, so functionality should be the same. May also be that Google only analyzes to a certain depth, don’t know. Would require research that I don’t have time for at the moment (see my front page news).

Reply

theturninggate July 17, 2010 at 2:45 pm

The site map issue is probably because the index uses Javascript rather than HTML hyperlinks to open the galleries. Probably something I should address in some way for accessibility reasons. I could maybe code hyperlinks into the index, then hide them using CSS to preserve present functionality, while giving bots, scripts, etc. traditional hyperlinks to chew on.

Reply

Michel July 17, 2010 at 2:44 pm

It’s not a problem of time or depth.

ok I understand, I saw your frontpage, we’ll see that later.

Hi Matt,

I saw in the demonstration, under the paragraph BUY IT that you had a link to your webpage. Is it really possible to create some links within the paragraphs with TTG Pages ?

Is it possible to change the names and links of HOME/GALLERY INDEX/ABOUT/CONTACT ? (in order to use it as a single page, but several times)

Thanks for your answer,

Reply

theturninggate July 19, 2010 at 10:01 am

The menu names and targets may be changed. You may also create additional menu items.

LR allows you to input some HTML into paragraphs, so yes, you can create hyperlinks.

Hi, just wanted to say thanks for such a great web engine. I’ve been playing around with Pages for a couple of months and with version 3.7 have finalized my new portfolio website. The new slideshow feature is exactly what I was waiting for, and the ability to include cusom CSS makes it so easy to update the site while keeping things like my custom background in place. Keep up the great work!

If I wish to include more pages within my website, I can add extra links to the menu items. However, where would I place the text for these extra pages. Particularly, I want a FAQ page, but wouldn’t know how/where to place the text for this page.

Am I missing something obvious?

May I firstly say … I do love your products! But I’m having a little problem here. Is there no way of keeping text boxes set to a specific size? I am constantly messing about with tags to try and force the boxes to be the same size on all pages, sometimes it really doesn’t seem to be possible. Even more of a problem when not including an image on the page. Am I missing something here? Cheers Simon

Box width is calculated based upon the size of the image and the specified copy width for each individual page. The way to achieve identical box sizes then would be to adjust the Copy Width sliders for each individual page in order to accommodate for the differences in image size.

Sorry, me again. How can I create extra space between text within a paragraph. I have been trying to use the but it doesn’t seem to be working. I have tried with and without the bits? Many thanks Simon

Line-breaks, do you mean? Try <br />.

No, line breaks work fine. I mean extra space between words, like sort of Tabs or indented sections. I’ve been using the – ampersand nbsp semicolon ( ), but it doesn’t seem to work in the TTG module.

Correction: “… it doesn’t seem to work in [Lightroom].”

LR tries to make the world a happier place by inconsistently replacing input with HTML, which often messes up attempts to embed real HTML into your pages.

When you type “&”, Lightroom tries to replace that with “&amp;”. So, when you try to use spacing as you describe, Lightroom is rendering “&amp;nbsp;” instead of “&nbsp;”.

There’s no real fix for this, which is really secondary to the point. The point being that your use of “&nbsp;” is actually bad web-design practice. If you want to indent content, you should be using either lists (ol, ul or dl as appropriate), or using CSS to set padding on your content.

For example, you might try something like this:

<span style=”padding-left: 15px;”>This is indented text.</span>

Or:

<span style=”text-indent: 15px;”>This is indented text.</span>

Each of the above pieces of code will render slightly different results depending upon the left of your text. Using “padding-left” will indent the entire block of text, regardless of length. Using “text-indent” will indent only the first line of a paragraph.

Hello.
Is it possible to integrate several galleries in TTG PAGES which are listed in the page menu? I purchased TTG AUTO INDEX for that reason, but did not get any satisfying result yet.
thanks
Helmut

Yes, it is possible. But I have no idea what you mean by you “did not get any satisfying result yet”. You’ll need to be more specific about what you’re doing, what you’re expecting, and what you’re getting instead.
